I have been chairperson for the Missions Committee for many years and in the last year was elected “Deacon of Missons”. I put together the agenda and conduct each monthly meeting. I meet with the Board of Deacons each month to communicate with other church areas.
MY FAITH JOURNEY
I grew up the eldest son of a Conference Baptist minister so I was in church every time the door was open. At the age of 8, following an evangelistic week of meetings conducted by my Uncle Everett Swanson, I knew that being a ‘PK’ wasn’t going to automatically get me into heaven. My dear mother prayed with me before bedtime and led me to the Lord. After high school, I went to Bethel College with the plan to teach high school science, but the Lord modified that plan and I ended up teaching science related classes at North Hennepin Community College for 33-years. In my final semester at Bethel, the Lord brought my beautiful wife-to-be into my life and we were married on May 1st, 1965.
My wife, Carole, is a registered nurse and worked in that profession for 50 years mostly in the area of long-term care. We adopted three children—Michael, who was killed in a car accident in 1972 at the age of 26 months, Steven, who was born in 1973 and is currently living with us, and Dena, who is married to Eric Nelson and they have two children –-Emma (14) and Evan (8) and they live in Brooklyn Park.
PASSIONS FOR THE KINGDOM
I have always had an interest in missions, but my mission calling was a college campus. Four of my siblings have served as “full-time overseas missionaries”. We have traveled to visit missionary siblings in Argentina and Ecuador. My daughter, Dena, and I went on one of our church mission trips to the Dominican Republic to conduct clinics. Carole and I joined the Gideons International soon after I retired from NHCC so that we would have a ministry together. We know lives are changed for eternity through His Word.
FAVORITE BIBLE VERSE
Isaiah 40:31 says: “…but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” And, Isaiah 55:11 which says: “…so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
We enjoy travel and travelogues. I enjoy golfing, bowling, hiking, and watching a variety of sports. While I also enjoy photography, I don’t consider it a hobby.
